Previously, he was the Editor-in-Chief of Engineering Reports. He completed his industrial PhD in Mechanical Engineering between the Università Politecnica delle Marche, Ancona, Italy and Siemens PLM, Leuven, Belgium, where he worked on interior characterization of automotive cabins, acoustic modal analysis, and sensor localization. His background is in structural dynamics, interior sound field characterization, and machine learning for structural health monitoring and customer segmentation. Rafal's background is analytical and biological chemistry.

He did his PhD and postdoctoral research in single-cell proteomics at Imperial College London, UK.

Prior to this she completed a PhD in Earth Sciences at the University of Cambridge, UK in igneous petrology and mantle geochemistry.
